Joseph Holbrook Tolman was born 17 July 1851 in Bountiful, Utah to Judson Tolman and Sarah Lucretia Holbrook.

Joseph married Emma Adella Wood 27 February 1871 in the Salt Lake City Endowment House. He later married Mary Ellen Cahoon 17 November 1887 at the Logan Temple. Mary Ellen was Joseph's second wife in a polygamist relationship. He had 15 children with his first wife Emma.
