Christiania (Kristiania, Oslo), Norway

City Name: Oslo - Christiania - Kristiania - Oslo

In the various genealogical records of my Norwegian ancestors you will see the name Christiania instead of Oslo. That is because Oslo was at one time called Christiania! In 1624 the medieval city of Oslo was mostly destroyed by fire. The old city was abandoned and a new city rebuilt to the west and was named Christiania by King Christian IV of Denmark and Norway. The spelling was officially changed to Kristiania in 1877 in Norwegian records except the city itself which changed the spelling in 1897. The village of Oslo was a suburb of the rebuilt Christiania and was included in the Christiania municipality in 1878. In 1925 the entire city was renamed Oslo. (Source)
